How to install a permanent sink screen

We recommend that a licensed plumber installs the SemperScreen® permanent sink screen or if you run into any difficulty: typically ~15 minutes per drain as a retrofit with no plumbing modifications.

1. Check the fit. The sink needs a standard 3½" (88.9 mm) drain opening and a 1½" (38.1 mm) tailpiece connection.
2. Remove the old drain part. Take out the existing basket strainer or disposal, then clean old sealant, debris and corrosion from the drain opening and mating surfaces.
3. Reconnect the dishwasher drain if a disposal came out. Use a high loop, or an air gap where your local code requires one.
4. Clear the line. Clear any existing clog so the drain line starts at full capacity.
5. Seat the screen. Set the permanent sink screen in the drain opening.
6. Tighten the tube nut. Thread the elongated tube nut onto the 1½" tailpiece connection below the sink and tighten to the torque in the printed instructions. Do not overtighten; the screen sits flush with, or slightly below, the basin surface.
7. Reconnect the piping. Reattach the tailpiece, trap and drain piping.
8. Test it. Run water at full flow for at least 30 seconds and check every connection for leaks, confirm the drain flows freely, and confirm the screen cannot be lifted out by hand.

Cleaning: scoop food waste into the trash or compost, and wipe the screen with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners, steel wool or chlorine bleach on stainless steel.
